Over the past two years, I have been appalled at the stereotypical characterization and treatment of Mexican and Central American immigrants by an administration whose partisan ideology and rhetoric reinforces a false perception of what it means to be American— ‘us’  (White Americans) vs. ‘them’ (foreigners, etc.) The photographs of Hach Winik are a reminder that true Americans have been here long before colonization of the ‘new world’.
